Artist Statement

JOHN GONNELLA / 2025
My work bridges the nostalgia of mid-20th century advertising with a bold, contemporary pop art flair. Drawing from a decades-long career as a creative director in the advertising industry, my large-scale acrylics on panel evoke a sense of both familiarity and intrigue. Using iconic imagery from the 1930s and beyond, I reinterpret these vintage motifs with vivid colors and slick strokes, creating a layered conversation between the past and present.

In recent years, I have expanded my artistic practice by incorporating new technologies, such as AI, into my work. This fusion of traditional media with cutting-edge digital tools allows me to reimagine my subjects and create fresh, dynamic compositions. By blending the human touch with algorithmic precision, I add another dimension to my exploration of femininity, family, and identity, further deepening the connection between tradition and modernity in my art.

​Living and working in Boston’s vibrant South End, my art is a dialogue between the media-driven pop culture I once helped shape and a more personal exploration of societal structures. Each painting invites viewers to reconsider their preconceptions and engage with  playful yet poignant use of imagery. My work melds the past with the future, challenging conventions and opening new avenues for artistic reflection.

Gonnella’s work can be said to be conforming yet bold: he presents the viewer with familiar, comfortable imagery, rendered with a shamelessly contemporary hand. He breathes new life into iconic figures with his use of bold colors, varied paint application techniques, and slick strokes. His work is a juxtaposition between old and illusive; the comfortable and the unspoken; the commercial and the aesthetic.

Gonnella borrows bold techniques from the world of advertising in his fine art renderings. As an Executive Creative Director world-class advertising agencies, John Gonnella draws from decades of creating branding experiences that invoke curiosity, engagement and participation. His clients include such major companies as Dunkin' Donuts, Panasonic, John Deere, Huawei, New Balance, Reebok and Timberland.
